Delving into the Ethics of Care

prof Jaco

Prof Jaco Hoffman

“Delving into the Ethics of Care” was facilitated by SACF Board Member Prof Jaco Hoffman in Fish Hoek on 17th September. Any SACF members who missed this great learning opportunity can access the video footage to share with your staff, on the members’ portal of the SACF website. Joan Tronto describes care as “…everything we do to maintain, continue, and repair our ‘world’ so that we can live in it as well as possible”.

This implies that care is the active process of everyday living as a relational competence and practice, situationally grounded.

Jaco facilitated a stimulating and enlightening discussion around the ethics of care approach. What is ethical is that which fosters the flourishing of relationships and of each living being within a given relationship. And so we explored the aesthetics of the everyday, the non event, the present moment, the small, the vulnerable – all the focus of the ethics of care. A stimulating day!
